Dear Roche Pharmaceuticals,
We, the undersigned, are contacting you to request that you expand your Patient Assistance Program so that people who live too far away from Direct Relief USA health clinics can receive the test strips they desperately need.
In the restructured program, instead of individuals applying for and receiving strips through the mail, they now must travel to one of only five clinics in each state, register as a patient there, and receive an allotment of test strips through the clinic. These strips are free, but hundreds of emails have communicated to us that the cost involved in becoming a patient in one of these five clinics can often exceed the cost of over-the-counter test strips.
A member wrote to us, "One manufacturer, Roche, who did offer assistance changed their program this year and only offers help through free outreach clinics. It sounds like a great idea, unless you happen live in an area without free clinics. We live in a rural area without any free clinics; since we live in a different county, we aren’t eligible for test strip assistance at those clinics within driving distance. (Also, they are 1+ hrs. away). But, my diabetes didn’t go away during this time… I still need to test.”
Please don't leave this life-threatening void unaddressed. It is all of our human rights' to have access to the medical supplies we need to live healthy lives. With or without insurance, we join together as the diabetes community to request an expansion to the Patient Assistant Program that will provide test strips for all of those in need.

I was just hospitalized with ketoacidosis, I have plenty of insulin for now through patience assistance program n our county. No asistance for test strips and cannot afford them nor have insurance. I have to test my sugars 3 times daily, find it impossible.

Shannon Cartee,
I would otherwise qualify, but there are no clinics in my state (New Mexico). We are one of the most poverty stricken states in the U.S. How can there be no assistance for citizens of such a poor state, from Roche?
mandy,
I work full time and have two children. After paying 00 a year for health insurance, they do not cover diabetic supplies. The middle class is the most disrespected class in this country. One should be a bum and sit home on Medicaid, choosing not to work. The other day, this lady waived her 1 medicaid co-pay for her prescription, because she had to pay 0 for her cigarettes. Meanwhile, I am paying for her prescription, it comes out of my taxpayer money! When do we get help? When do we, the people earning an honest living, get some relief???

Simply put. When do the people paying into the system receive their break? There should be incentive to remain healthy, thus lowering the costs of insurance, In order to be healthy we MUST know what our blood sugars are and we can't do that without test strips at this time.

Nina Brooks,
I lost my job and have no insurance. I need to test my blood sugar 5+ times a day. I can not afford test strips, although I can get then insulin through a program, I also have to pay for needles, but those are not as expensive and can use them more than once.
Anonymous Signature,
Please expand on this program however you can. I personally have seen just how in need many populations, especially those who do not qualify for medical insurance or who are going through hard transitions in their lives are in need of such programs to receive such diabetic monitoring supplies to keep them healthy.

Test strips are just as vital as the medication diabetes requires.Without test strips, diabetes glucose levels cannot be managed or monitored accurately. Therefore, uncontrolled glucose levels do result into life threatening high and low glucose levels at anytime. Diabetes needs close management and this can only be done through the use of diabetic supplies....not guessing games or the abscence of the diabetic supplies. Without medical supplies & equipment diabetes can never be managed and it's complications give rise very quickly...resulting into disabilities and/or death. We diabetics never asked for this disease but we are asking for help to manage and control the diabetes when we truly need the help to stay alive and healthy.
Lawrence Merritt,
As a person with diabetes and no insurance coverage, my biggest concern is not being able to test my blood sugar because of the high cost of test strips. Anything that can be done to make these available to people without insurance SHOULD be done.
Anonymous Signature,
I need to test my blood sugar 6 times a day. I can not afford test strips.
A. Williams,
I work as a patient advocate, and see the results of the uninsured, underinsured, and just plain poverty-striken who cannot get their strips; it's devastating to their health. How can they manage diabetes without test strips? They can't. It's about time someone realized this and helped them.
Monica R. Torres,
Victor Reyes,
My story is exactly like "Anonymus Signature" so I just copied thier comment...I was just hospitalized with ketoacidosis, I have plenty of insulin for now through patience assistance program in our county. But there is no asistance for test strips and cannot afford them nor have insurance. I have to test my sugars 3 times daily & find it impossible to pay .00 or more for just 50 strips. I need help somehow to continue checking my sugar level somehow.

I too am a hard working American with a wonderful wife and two kids who can not afford enough supplies to manage my Type 1 diabetes, I am forced to use needles two or three times and lancets till they are dull and painful. I have Insulin but i need help too if i am going to live to see my kids grow up.. the story is the same all over the country. Why does a little paper strip cost us in some cases like mine 1.00 each HELP US !!!
Jordan Farnsworth,
I use to live close to one of those clinics that offered 1-box of 50 test strips for free 1x month. On my quarterly visits, I would buy 4-other boxes at each so I would have 250 test strips to last me till the next visit, which is pure profit for these clinics. Since my business went under in October 2011 and I have moved over 100-miles away from that clinic and with cost of gas over bucks here in SoCal and with no recurring income (although I'm diligently looking), makes it impossible to afford those test strips. Yet there are low to no cost clinics in my area who have not been approved for these PAP's. Hmmm.
Anonymous Signature,
I simply can not afford the test strips and I dont know if the meter I have works anymore. I only have a part time job, and no insurance, and I am suppose to check my blood surgar twice a day, and I havnt had the money to buy the test strips so I dont know what my blood sugar is suppose to be. please hlp me.
Thank you
Hanif,
I am a diabetic (type 2) and desperately need test strips as I have to check twice daily and I can't afford to buy from the market. I am unemployed and not covered under any health care program!.

I am a Nursing student & have two jobs. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 12 years ago...not the type that just goes away after exercising & eating healthy. It's a LIFE-LONG CHRONIC DISEASE. I am denied by every insurance company that I apply for due to my "underlying condition" while there are people not working, with NO chronic health conditions that are getting assistance for simply being a bum or getting pregnant at before marriage. Hispanics are getting insured through Medicaid before even becoming LEGAL! This is ridiculous! WE, MIDDLE CLASS, TAX PAYING CITIZENS NEED HELP!!!
Sincerely,
Ashley Thrash

I do not have insurance because of the expense. I am struggling to buy diabetic supplies. I also have gastroparesis. I really need help with supplies.
Nicolas Morales,
I had been feeling really bad a few years ago. I couldn't quench my thirst. I was in the bathroom every 15 minutes. One day I couldn't even get out of bed. My wife had hounded me day after day to go to the ER, but I was convinced the bad feeling would pass. It didn't. I thought I was dying. I finally went to the ER because I didn't have insurance. My sugar was over 600. The doctor was surprised I wasn't dead. They gave me medicine and I got a doctor appointment that I had to pay out of my pocket. I got two years worth of meds. My test supplies came out of my pocket as well. Now I've been out for over three weeks now. My wife, has been laid off and we are totally broke. I felt weird tonight and just took my pill without testing myself. I had no choice. It was either wait it out and hope the feeling would pass. Or take the pill. Why can't the government help the tax payers. Insurance at my company costs 0 a month. I am only partime. My pay is about 0 a month. Over 1/3 of my pay would go on insurance. My wife has high blood pressure and has no insurance either. She needs a check up. She hasn't seen a doctor in years. Why do the government let insurance companies jack up the rates so high. Why do I see so many lazy people in the hospitals with free medicaid? I pay for them to sit around doing drugs/alcohol. While I stay clean and can't even get help for my diabetes? Why? So only the rich and the bums get access to healthcare at the tax payers expense. Well the lazies do anyway. It just doesn't make sense. I sure could use help here. Maybe I got to wait til I have another diabetic emergency before I can get help again. Please consider those of us working class for a change. What happens when we die? I'm sure all those lazies aren't going to get up and come clean your toilets and build your buildings and roads.

I'm his wife and am adding to his reply. Watching him going without testing supplies scares me. We are too broke right now to spend anything on his diabetic needs. The strips are way too expensive. He took his medicine tonight just because be felt weird. That scares me. Now I have to stay awake tonight because his blood sugar could drop in his sleep. I don't want to wake up to a dead husband. Please help us get these supplies. Like one person said. We didn't ask for this disease. Please help....

I just recently lost my job and insurance cant afford my insulin let alone test strip no help available were I live for test strips ready to guess my sugar levels or just quite all together and hope the good lord takes care of me
Greg Bobo,
I live in a state that doesn't offer any kind of assistance for people that are very low income and are diabetic. I have to ask for handouts and assistance through a local pharmacy for test strips and meters and I get my insulin through the patient assitance program offered by Novo Nordisk. If it weren't for these two excellent and caring companies I would probably be dead right now. I don't know how much longer I can get help at the pharmacy and if I can't check my sugar then I might as well be walking blind.
Melissa Yarborough,
I was hospitalized in ICU in March of this year for dibetic ketoacidosis. I ended up there because I ran out of test strips and was unable to test myself.I am an uninsured Type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump. I test my sugars at least 6 times per day and wish there were more options for those of us who cannot afford to buy diabetic supplies out of pocket. Thank you
Michael B. Johnson, Jr.,
I am a 3 times a day tester and with the high cost of test strips and my job not offering health insurance, I cannot afford the strios I need to do all my testing. Now I can only test once a day, maybe twice a day if I get over time at work and make a few extra bucks!!!
Sajan Silwal,

Roche should take down the website that says it will give free test strips if you qualify. I printed out the form, had my doctor sign it and give a script for strips, mailed it, just got it back today with return to sender no just number unable to forward. I do not live near ANY of the clinics. I am on 2 types of insulin. My PA tells me it is dangerous for me to be on insulin without testing, my ALc was 11. What am I to do, I work 4 hours a week at Walmart payed every 2 weeks. I cannot afford test strips!
PAMELA TUCKER,
My 20 yr old daughter was just diagnosed with type one diabetes, I don't know how we are going to pay for her test strips.. I cannot work do to my severly disabled son, she cannot work do to health issues and does not qualify for medicaid...we almost lost her and she spent a week in ICU. We need help, I don't want to lose my child!!!
Jessica M.,
I've been struggling with being able to afford my diabetes supplies for 3-4 years now. The Department of Human Services in Michigan is restricting access to healthcare for patients that qualify for Medicare and enrollment for the program is currently closed. It is incredibly expensive and a strong burden on me and especially my health having to constantly worry whether I will have medication this month or this week. Test strips are a a very big and main priority for diabetics. Without test strips diabetics have no way of knowing what our blood glucose level is at. I've had to limit my testing to once a day and my glucose levels are terrible. Without enough strips I will never have the proper control over my levels and might as well look forward to many diabetic complications down the road. Why are these companies and our government willing to let this happen...

My boyfriend was just hospitalized for ketoacidosis twice in one week for having a low and then readmitted for having over a 400. He is now under sedation and has a machineto assist his breathing. I know its because we cant afford his test strips. If we could find them for free.or even discounted it would of helped so much. I still dont understand why people charge uyou for things you need to live, Unbeliveable

I have been a type 1 Diabetic since the age of 10, a total of 21 years now. I am a stay at home Mom of 2 wonderful boys, and my husband is a hard-working man that is grossly nder paid and not offered any benefits. With diabetes, it is impossible for normal, working class people to purchase private insurance. I can qualify for help with my medications, although I have no choice but to go off of my long past warranty insulin pump and back to the 5+ shots a day, requiring testing of at least that often. We are a single income family working shard just to survive, and people like us simly cannot afford the strips hat we need to manage our health properly. Please, Roche, won't you reconsider your programs? These clinics are so sporadically placed and inaccessible to the majority of the diabetic population. Please help us!

Robyn Baker,
I have a clinic in my state, but it is over 2 hours away from where I live. I can not afford to pay the doctor because I no longer have insurance. I lost my job where I had insurance at- due to going into a diabetic coma- where my blood sugar reached over 1500. The reason I went into this comma was due to your faulty infsuion set- the flex link- the doctors said that there was no insulin in my body. Which by the way you issued a recall for this item- three months later- in your letter you stated: that the tubing was not large enough for insulin to by pass through this item.
nicole millan,
I am type 2 diabetes borderline being type 1 my insurance only allows enough test strips for a couple times a week and I can not afford to purchase them. thank you for all you do for the diabetics out there !

I am an advocate in a very small rural town of Elkton,KY. Our clinic sees only the working uninsured. We have 100 plus diabetic patients and each one has a great need of diabetic supplies and of course can't afford them. I agree, the cinics listed through the Roche Pharm. diabetic program are not within reach for our patiets as the closest clinic to our patients is a 2 hour drive. Yes, our patients are working, however, most of their jobs are not full time positions with only minimal pay, they can't afford the drive. If there was a PAP for diabetic supplies if only for a limited amount of supplies this would be of a great help for our patients. If possible please let me know of any program that you may be aware of for our patients.
Thank you,
