Sewer Mouth For The 4th of July

What is sewer mouth you ask? It’s that nasty film that forms on your tongue when your sugar is stubbornly high. It’s when you get ketones and people don’t want to be down wind of your breath. You think it’s bad for the other person? Trying tasting it. You brush your teeth and tongue and just cannot get it to go away. No matter what you do, you have “sewer mouth.”

My boyfriend describes ketone breath to people as “sewage from a bakery.” I used to get insulted, now I just shrug it off. Well, with him at least. I realize that he knows 9 out of 10 times I have no control over it. When I have ketones or stubborn highs I try not to talk to others, or I keep my mouth somewhat covered and basically just chew breath mints the whole time I’m talking. It’s really embarrassing.

Sometimes I wonder if all Diabetics are aware when they have it. I figure type 1s test more so they are probably aware. Type 2s can be a different story. I have spoken to type 2s that I know don’t test often. I smell the telltale breathe and am faced with a dilemma. Do I mention that I think they should test their sugar, or just deal with the guilt of knowing they are probably high and don’t know it? So far, I have just dealt with the guilt.

On the fourth of July we had company and I decided to make Bacon Nutella cake. I (along with every sane person) love Nutella. My boyfriend and my sister’s girlfriend love bacon (OK who doesn’t?) So I thought about breakfast and what bacon goes well with. I went with chocolate cake, a Lingonberry syrup to moisten the cake filled and topped it with Nutella Butter Cream and sprinkled on some candied bacon. The cake came out really good. But that was thanks to my hungry helpful boyfriend. I woke up with my sugar over 400 and had no sense of taste. I had to have taste every component and describe it to me. Of course he was Ok with it. I was a nervous wreck. I take pride in what I bake and everything tasted like cardboard to me. I guess it was a hit because everyone was taking pictures and posting them on FB. I really had no energy so that cake was nothing special to look at (except for the bacon of course).

The next day I was back in the 100s and finally got to see what the cake tasted like. All I can say is Nutella and bacon are a great combo. So I know it was the sewer mouth ruining everything the day before.
