On Vacation

There is always a lot to remember when packing for a vacation, especially one to a tropical location.  Sunscreen, bathing suit(s), cool clothing, sunglasses, aloe, etc.  But if you have diabetes, that list is twice as long.  Insulin pump supplies, insulin, test strips, back up glucose meters, etc.  Even when you’re only going away for a few days, making sure you have enough supplies *just in case* can be nerve wracking.  Joe and I just got back from a vacation in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.  We had a glorious time and I’m happy to report that diabetes behaved itself while we were there =)  We did some relaxing, drinking, some eating, more relaxing and some more drinking.  The resort was absolutely gorgeous and spotless, the staff friendly, the surroundings breath taking, the food delicious, just a wonderful place.  If you have diabetes, you know how hard managing your blood sugar can be when out of your normal element.  And I’ve had a horrible time in the past staying in control.  But for some reason, for which I’m very thankful, I only had one episode of high bg which lasted only about 2.5 hours, thanks to my Dexcom.  (And I can thank the yummy strawberry daquiri I had for that high!)  We are now back to reality at home and I feel like our trip was just a dream.  But I have these pictures I took to remember and it brings me back to hearing the sound of the waves crashing outside our room.
