Infection

Two weeks ago, I noticed that my numbers were a lot higher than normal.  I really wasn’t sure what was going on because everything was fine just the day before and nothing in my routine had changed.  When I got home, I realized it was time to change my infusion site.  When I took out the old infusion site, I realized that there was some blood and the area felt swollen. I suspected that it was infected.  I called my endo’s office, unfortunately, this happened after office hours so I had to leave a message.  The endo on call did phone me back and I gave her all my pertinent information (me being pregnant) since I am not her her regular patient.  Immediately, I started feeling uncomfortable because she reacted by saying, well you know high blood sugar is not good for the baby right?  Gee, really?  I didn’t know that.  I couldn’t believe she said that to me.  All I wanted was advice on what to do, not a lesson on diabetes and pregnancy.  After I hung up with her, I called my ob/gyn who told me to go to the ER.  At this point, I was extremely hungry and my blood sugars still weren’t cooperating.  The same endo called me again and I informed her that I was going to the ER and was just eating something since it was late at this time (9pm) and I hadn’t had dinner.  She said, well, I hope you’re not eating any carbs in a snarky way.  I couldn’t believe it!  I felt so insulted, and treated like a 5 year old who didn’t know any better.  I remember not being very nice to her after that.  I am going through pregnancy hormones, and already worried about what this infection was doing to the baby, and the last thing I needed was a snarky endo making things worse for me.  Well, I ended up going to the ER that night where they prescribed an antibiotic for me.  Unfortunately, I had a bad reaction to it but there wasn’t much of a choice since there aren’t too many antibiotics that pregnant women can take.  After a few days feeling sick, I eventually got better and feeling more like myself.  Being pregnant and being a PWD made me more susceptible to the infection, and I’m glad now I know what to look for in case it happens again.  I just wish I had been treated better by the on call endo, instead of like a child that needed to be reprimanded.

  • What an ass! I hate doctors like that. I had a similar experience lately… I totally feel you.

  • Sorry to hear what you went thru’! I went thru’ similar experience past week, but I’m not pregnant, can’t imagine how you felt with your hormones even being more out of whack then ours normally are as PWD’s. Wish some medical dudes had a better bed side manner with us.

Firstly, I’m sorry that you got the infection. I’ve been fortunate to not have that happen to me. Secondly, and more importantly, I’m sorry that you had to deal with such a demeaning doctor during it. I hope you didn’t take what she was saying to heart because you have been doing wonderfuly keeping yourself healthy for your baby. I hope you’re feeling better all around!

  • I’m sorry that the on-call doc was such a turd. That was the last thing you needed. And it really stinks that the antibiotic made you feel crappy too! What a ride!

Sorry to hear about the infection. I don’t understand why doctors do that. They think they are being helpful when actually they are just being obnoxious and useless

UGHH how dare that endo! That’s outrageous. We all know how incredible hard you’ve been working to care for you and your baby. You’re so right taht you don’t deserve to be treated like that. I hope you feel better soon!!
