The waiting game…

Boy am I glad it’s April.  Means our little baby will be here next month.  I am incredibly lucky not to have had too many complications during this pregnancy, and know it could have been far worse.  However, I am ready to meet the little one.  I have just a few weeks to go, but already find it difficult to get around.  In just the past few weeks, my belly has grown exponentially, and so has the baby.  She is definitely moving a lot in there, and especially likes to wake me up at night with her hiccups.  Commuting to and from work is also getting to be difficult, since I am usually sitting on a crowded bus for an hour each way.  Lugging around a huge belly is not good for one’s back!

As far as managing diabetes, I am still logging my numbers and food intake as best as I can.  I am looking forward to taking a break from this once she is born.  The other challenge I’m finding is looking for sites other than my belly area for the infusion set.  Last week, I tried using my upper thigh and ran high most of the day.  I guess the pump just didn’t work for me as well using anything other than my belly area.  I will try using other sites again once I’m not pregnant but running over 200+ levels most of the day when it was on my upper thigh definitely scared me.  Of course I went low later on in the day when the insulin finally caught up with me.  For pump users out there, do you find that the belly area is generally better for your levels?  If you are using your arm or upper thighs as sites, how different on a percentage basis would you say your bg levels are compared to the belly?

I used my arm so often that lately I get terrible numbers with them. I do get great absorbtion on the backside though. I don’t like using my tummy. I just find it hurts.

I can’t not wait to meet your little princess. I know this is a difficult time in your pregnancy, it will be well worth it soon enough ;)

I use all over my abdomen area – even going toward the back. I also use the hips and arms. All of those places usually work well and don’t have me running high. Once in a while I’ll get a set in the arm that doesn’t quite work so well. I cannot use my thighs or butt … no absorption at all. It kind of stinks looking for new real estate but asking around is a good idea! I’m so glad to know you and baby are doing well otherwise :)

Ooo good topic. My abdomen absorbs the quickest, but recently it has been rejecting sites and i haven’t been able to use it. So for the past several weeks I’ve been using my thighs. What I’ve found (and talked to my endo about) is that they don’t start the absorption for a few hours in. So, sometimes I run high (2-300′s) for a couple hours after site change, but then I go back down and it is pretty much equivalent to abdomen for the rest of the 3 days. Is that what happens to you ? Or is it even longer?

I haven’t tried anything but abdomen and thighs in my first few months, so that’s all I’ve got for you – good luck!

And I’m also happy to hear that baby is doing well :)

  • Can’t say much of anything on this female-focused topic, but I do know that Kerri over at SixUntilMe might have some good insight – she’s blogged about it, and is currently in the “final stages” of pregnancy for April. Anyhow, on yours: Good luck, best wishes, and pre-congrats before the little one arrives!

  • Congrat’s on being able to meet your little boy next month. I use the Omnipod. I get great numbers from my belly, butt and thighs.

Love handles! They work really well for me. I find that my tummy hurts especially upper ab area where there is less cushin, but if you have a great set of love handles, use them! Just be careful not to use a site too close to your pants waist-line.
