Good Appointments do Happen

When I came home from my endo (endocrinologist) appointment last week, I felt like I was on speed.  Well since I’ve never taken speed, I felt like what I imagine being on speed feels like.  I was energized, happy, motivated, I felt like I was super-charged!  And to be honest, I wouldn’t mind feeling like that after every endo appointment.

Each time I go to that office and know that I’m having blood work drawn, a1c tested and blood glucose numbers analyzed, I freak out.  This time was no different.  I had seen a significant decrease in my a1c three months prior and so was especially concerned about what it was going to be this time.  When I sat in the exam room talking with Dr. R, and the lab tech knocked on the door and said “7.0″ I thought I might scream with excitement!  It had gone down even more!  I have been working so hard since going on the pump 3 years ago to get my a1c to a more “acceptable” level and have been having a hard time.  Even though my numbers have been much better when testing than they had been before, I wasn’t seeing such an improvement in my a1c.  Which if you’ve been in that situation, you know just how frustrating and discouraging it is.  But this was a time to celebrate!!  I know 7.0 isn’t perfect and I would do anything for a 6.0 but for now that is a great accomplishment that I am going to savor for a while.  And try to keep up.  What made the appointment even better, is what happened when I was leaving.  Dr. R said to me “nice job on the a1c” so I said “thank you” to her.  She then said “no, thank yourself”.  Her recognition of my work on trying to manage my diabetes to the best of my ability was what I think started the “speed” feeling!  And meant more to me that she will ever know.
