Love Amongst the Islets of Langerhans

Today’s guest blog is by Kelly Kunik ….. please check her out over at Diabetesaliciousness

I love my Endo. BIG TIME.

Not in the romantic storybook, I want to marry him and bear all his children/live happily ever after/THE END type of way. No matter what others in the diabetes on-line community say, I’m not that much of a psycho. For god sake’s people he’s my Dr!

But I will admit, there have been moments when Dr J has swept me off my feet!

First off, he never checks his watch when he’s with me- ever. The time we spend together is just as important to him as it is to me.

As far as our communication skills as a duo, the man actually listens to what I have to say. AND he talks TO ME, not at me.
He’s always honest and up front with me  -and makes me feel safe.
And whenever I have questions- get this, he actually answers them to the best of his abilities.

Dr J never gives me the “evil eye” when my numbers go off track. Instead, we talk about why those numbers happened. And then he and I talk about how we can improve them. We learn from my diabetes mishaps and move on.

Whenever I find myself hanging from a ledge of diabetes fear and self-doubt, my Endo talks me back down and brushes my fears aside.

And my Endo actually gives me gifts. Maybe not diamonds or chocolate, but high quality swag just the same. I’m talking bottles of insulin, vials of test strips, shiny new meters, and sample packages of high quality med that protect my heart and kidneys.

He also keeps me posted on all the latest and greatest research about diabetes.

My Endo is a prince among endocrinologists and I thank my lucky stars that we found each other.

NEWSFLASH:  If he didn’t respect me, my time, my diabetes and my issues with said diabetes  – I’d leave him in a heartbeat and find me an Endo who would!

If your Endo isn’t making you feel downright enchanted- find one who will!

This isn’t a fairytale, it’s your life, and you’re worth it!

WOW that is so fabulous!! It’s so good to hear those endos actually exist – and definitely that we shouldn’t settle for less. What an adorable love story. Thanks for blogging with us and let us know what he gives you on Valentine’s Day. :)

  • Kelly, that is a fantastic blog! I am lucky to have one of those amazing Endo’s too… now if I would only go and see him as often as I should…

Thanks for inspiring others to make sure they get the care they deserve! :)

  • Hey K2! (Your post title made me grin.) So amazing that you found a doc like that. I’m so glad you have an endo who praises you for your successes, that’s so very important!

Okay, forgive me, but I’m about to rant a little. My endo has criticized me for having an A1C that’s too low(!!!) (He’s the Mr. Sweetened Ice Tea endo that Lee Ann talked about in her blog a few months ago.) I stay with him because he’s very proactive, willing to take on extra work to keep his patients in good control, but when he started chiding me for taking too good care of myself? And testing 12-15 times/day when I know that’s been one of the main factors in keeping my kidney disease from progressing? I started thinking of finding someone else.

All this to ask…would you mind emailing me his name? Even if I have to drive an hour out of the way, finding a doc like that would be worth it. Now I have this sinking feeling whenever I go to my endo, and this post has reminded me that’s not how it should be…

Thank you so much K2 for posting for us … and for sharing such wonderful thoughts :)
Although we basically manage our diabetes ourselves on a day to day basis, we still need the direction and assistance from our diabetes team (if applicable) which is lead by our endos. Since they do play a pretty big part in our “treatment”, it is very important to have a good relationship with them. But we know unforatunately that is not always the case. I am so glad for you that you have found one that is not only competent but also a prince!

  • K2-

I left with a bag of sample kwikpens and info on pumps. . it felt like Christmas!

Kelly you are so generous to blog with us! I am so happy that you are reminding people that we have a right to love our endos. I feel this is the most important doctor I see and I too love my endo! If I didn’t, he would be short one patient.
