Appointment Burnout

Last week, I had four appointments with either a doctor or a nutritionist.  On Monday, we went to get the results of a test on whether or not I had a blood disorder.  If I had this disease, it would almost certainly mean a c-section for me. Thankfully, the answer was no. Tuesday, went to see the nutritionist for a consult.  On Thursday, went to see the perinatologist (maternal/fetal doctor) to adjust my basal rates as I had been running high for the past few weeks for both my fasting glucose and my post prandials.  Finally on Friday, went to the endocrinologist to get my A1C and review my blood sugar logs to see if the new basal rate I implemented should stay the same or change.

It’s been quite rough with all these appointments because I have to juggle them with a full time job. Thankfully, my employer has been very understanding and has always told me the baby’s health is much more important.  Even though logically it makes sense, I still feel so guilty everytime I have to go to an appointment.  Unfortunately many of the practioners I see don’t have weekend office hours so I have no choice but to go during work hours.

There’ll only be more appointments the closer I get to my due date.  I will have to see my ob/gyn every two weeks, keep seeing the perinatologist and endocrinologist on a constant basis, not to mention seeing a CDE, an opthalmologist, and the dentist!  I really shouldn’t complain, because I’m getting the best care I can possibly get and I’m taking care of myself in the best way I know how.  I keep thinking after the baby is born, I won’t have to go through this again!  But then I get reminded that the real work is jut beginning.

*Don’t feel guilty!* Your employer is right.

After the baby is born, you add in the pediatrician….

  • Continue to take good care of you and your baby, that’s the most important thing right now.

Oof I hear you. I don’t have all of those extra appts of course for the pregnancy, but when I have something going on or my appts line up, I feel like I spend all of my time with docs and it is too much. You’re doing such a wonderful job taking care of yourself now though – so I hope you can feel proud as well!

I can only imagine how overwhelming all the appointments seem at times. It sometimes feels like that regularly without adding a pregnancy to the mix. But try to keep the end result in mind when you feel overwhelmed … A healthy baby girl and mommy :) And you only have a few more months to go!
