You Gotta Have Faith

Post by Coral’s Incredible Mom!

My father’s mother had Type 1 Diabetes.  She was a big strong Swedish immigrant who died before I was born, but I was named for her.  My parents expected me to inherit her disease, but unfortunately, it was my youngest child who did.  Ever since she was diagnosed in elementary school, I have felt guilty for this.  Mothers pray for their children to be spared pain and suffering all their lives;  for my only daughter to have a genetic disease that I could not control was agonizing.  I enrolled her in research studies at Stanford University’s hospital for children with the hope that they might find a cure.

Over a decade has passed, and Coral has grown up to be a beautiful and compassionate citizen of the world.  She has never limited herself by having diabetes, and continues to amaze me with her independence and resourcefulness.  Perhaps the hardest thing for me to have accepted since she’s left home, is that my baby is all grown up.  She is in control of her disease, and takes good care of herself.  I am always grateful that her decisions are wise ones.   I have learned from her, too.  She has taught me to  trust her judgment, despite living  3000 miles away.  I am thankful that she has found other diabetic women who are intelligent and supportive of each other.  A big thank you to each and every member of ACT I ~ for you have helped me have faith!

I didn’t know Coral as a child but she indeed is a beautiful and compassionate citizen of the world as an adult :) I am so glad that we have given you faith but your daughter also plays a large role in that!

Coral is such an amazing young woman. In the short time I have known her I have watched her rise up and grab this disease by it’s tail and give a good swing. She is like a completely different person. She is so proactive now and open to having “devices attached to her” again with the goal of tight control. She is a true inspiration to us all. You should be very proud of the woman you created, she is one tough cookie.

I love these guest blog posts! My mom is 1700 miles away from me and sometimes just says things in email like “i hope you have a good day with your diabetes” and it makes me feel good for her to understand it’s daily. When I got a pump I didn’t say much about it to my friends, but as soon as I saw my mom I pulled it out and explained it all to her. Moms are important. :)

Agreed, having faith is key to surviving with diabetes for everyone involved! And Coral has brought so much of it to ACT1. I’m trying to learn how to talk more slowly and calmly from her. :)
