What is the first thing everyone thinks about when thinking about Thanksgiving? I guarantee it’s food. Of some sort. Whether it be turkey or mashed potatoes or cranberry sauce or pumpkin pie or stuffing. I think we can all agree that food is the main highlight of Thanksgiving everywhere since that’s the wonderful tradition. But what else do PWD (people with diabetes) think about when thinking about Thanksgiving? I guarantee it’s insulin. Or blood sugar. See, while mostly everyone else can stuff their faces with lots of delicious food with the only worry being saving room for dessert, us PWD have to count every carb and calculate every unit of insulin to deliver to ourselves in order to enjoy that delicious food if we want to stay on top of our blood sugar levels. I’m sure some of us are going to overestimate our carb intake and some of us are going to underestimate and some of us are going to get it just right. Some of us may have high readings all day and some of us may have up and down readings. But we’re still going to enjoy the day to the fullest with all the food and the company of our family and friends. Because that is what we do every day and in that respect, Thanksgiving is no different.
So pass the gravy … with a side of insulin please
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and their families and friends! And to my D friends, here’s to a day full of not only good food but good numbers too!

Happy turkey-day, Stacey!!!
Weirdly, my bg is almost always in great shape after holidays…even though I really don’t (can’t) count carbs. There are so many little yummy things I want to try, a bite of each kind of pie (and cookie and brownie), spoonfuls of potatoes and sweet potatoes and stuffing and cranberry sauce and rolls…I don’t want d to stop me when I’m supposed to be celebrating. I realize it adds up to about 50 trillion carbs, so I just guesstimate and remarkably always seem to end up under 180.
Happy Thanksgiving…I hope you and your family have a great holiday!
Great post and so true. Here’s hoping The Insulin Fairy and The Blood Sugar Fairy are in sync for all of us and our numbers stay just right!!
Same to you Stacey! I remember “back in the day” when Equal type products first came out and my grandma (bless her soul) tried to make a sugar-free pumpkin pie for me with that stuff. Let’s just say I don’t think she ever did it again.
Everyone, enjoy the day!!!
Yay Turkey! I hope everyone’s blood levels are fantastic and so is your holiday!
Happy Thanksgiving & Carb Consuming/Guestimating to you all too!
I hope that your blood sugar cooperates tomorrow so that you can eat all of our declicious food.
Can’t wait to see you tomorrow.
Pass the insulin and the pumpkin pie! Happy Thanksgiving
