Yes you heard it right, I’m actually using the pump this very moment. Last week, after an appointment with my endo, we decided that trying the pump might be a good idea for me to get myself in better control. I had initially been reluctant to try it because I didn’t want to be attached to anything, but if that meant having tighter control, I should at least give it a shot. So after getting in contact with the folks at minimed, I met with the rep yesterday and was taught how to use the pump. I am only using it to bolus for meals and to correct for highs post prandial. I am still using Levamir injections for my basal.
Since I’m not technologically gifted, I anticipated having some issues with figuring out how it would work, especially changing the reservoir, and figuring out how to bolus. Thankfully, I took careful notes and was able to make it work without any issues. It takes some getting used to, since I’m not accustomed to having something on me all the time, but it’s not as cumbersome as I thought it would be. The only issue I may have is that I love wearing dresses in the summer, and I’m going to have to figure out a place to put the pump. I know others use straps, or sew pockets inside their dresses to place it in, so we’ll see how that goes. Other than that, I found sleeping with the pump to be ok, the rep said I can hide it under my pillow, which I did and I didn’t notice it at all.
This morning as I finished testing my blood sugar, I found myself reaching for my pen needle and novolog, forgetting I didn’t need to do that. It was a strange feeling not having to inject myself before eating. Another great thing about the pump is that it reminds me to test post prandial, whereas before I would forget to do so.
So far, it has been a good experience. An advantage to the minimed is the real time cgm, which talks directly to the pump and monitors your blood glucose by every minute and would be helpful in seeing trends. Of course, this is separate from the pump and is subject to whether insurance will approve it.
Next week, I have an appointment with an Animas rep to see if I can test their pump. I had heard great things about both and wanted to make an informed decision before going with either.

Congrats! That is so great you are trying it out. Then you can see if it will really be a benefit to you or not. I’ve been on the pump for almost 3 years now and LOVE it. I debated going back on injections a few times, but when I think about all the things the pump offers that MDI’s don’t – I never went back. Good luck, and let us know what happens!
Oh Gen I am so happy for you!!! Getting tighter control is so important and to see you doing this really proves you are determined. I remember before I went on my pump, thinking it would heavy and annoying. Now, I can’t even find it sometimes I am so oblivious to it! Good Luck, know we are here if you need us for support and/or advice
That’s so great that you were able to actually test the MM! I really wish I knew they did that when I went on it. But see, we weren’t lying when we said you don’t notice it most of the time
. It takes some getting used to but hopefully you will like it enough to go for it. So proud of you!!
Congrats, Gen!!! I hope to follow in your footsteps soon
I’m so impressed you took the plunge!
I have bought a few of these for my pump and like ‘em – http://stores.ebay.com/PUMPN-IN-STYLE?_rdc=1 – doesn’t drag down clothes and can move around more easily than a pocket.
