Importance of Support by: Genevieve

Last night, we had our monthly adult support group meeting and I’m happy to say we had our largest ever turnout.  There were some new faces as well as some familiar ones.  One even came all the way from Philadelphia to attend the group!

One of the topics we discussed was how unreliable the A1C test is for Type 1 PWD’s.  We noted how extreme highs and lows may lead to a fairly “good” A1C result, masking the real issue of whether one’s diabetes is properly controlled.  We also discussed the importance of having an endocrinologist who is not only knowledgable, but also attentive and really works with you in making sure you are doing everything possible to manage diabetes.

It was really great hearing everyone’s perspectives and having that emotional support that one can only get by being around other PWD’s.  We can all understand the frustrations of dealing with this disease everyday, as well as some of the humorous aspects of it.  As much as we rely on our families and friends, sometimes we really need that connection and encouragement that comes only from other PWD’s.

Here here! That was a great meeting. And it was good to discuss how this test which so many of us judge ourselves so harshly by is really so flawed.

I couldn’t agree more! I am always confused and frustrated by the A1C because mine has never been below 8.0 in my adult years, and yet ALL of my other lab tests come back normal. I’ve been wearing the same eye glasses since high school. What gives?

Support… is so important and just for diabetics : )

I was judged by only my A1c, you would think I was doing fabulous.
By the way, the meeting was phenomenal!
